Our history goes back to 1990 when the Rev. William Dwyer was the rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal church on Buckingham Street. He had learned Spanish and had come to know and appreciate Latin American and Caribbean culture when he was a young priest in New York City.

During his time at St. Peter’s, he began knocking on doors and getting to know those who were receptive to talking to him about themselves and their religious backgrounds. He first met Mrs. Yolanda Gautier and her family and later the Reyes family when they temporarily lived with Yolanda. When Xiomara Reyes, her husband, Ruben and their three children moved into their own apartment, Father Dwyer continued his visits, celebrating the Holy Eucharist with the Reyes family, Yolanda’s family and the neighbors that the two women invited. Thus, early on Father Dwyer ministered to this house church of mostly Puerto Rican and Dominican members. As the numbers increased, Father Dwyer held a weekly Spanish mass in the chapel at St. Peter’s on Saturday’s.

In 1998, Father Dwyer decided to retire from St. Peter’s, but he wanted his Spanish-speaking congregation to continue to have a church home. He proposed moving the congregation to Christ Church Cathedral. There were many meetings and discussions in the Cathedral with those who were for the move and those opposed. In the end, there was a consensus to have the Hispanic Congregation move to its new home at the Cathedral with Father Dwyer continuing his ministry with the small but growing community. The mass was first celebrated in the Chapel of Reconciliation which is a small area in the main sanctuary in the South Transept. Eventually, they outgrew this space and moved into the center of the sanctuary.

At this time, grants were obtained to fund the Hispanic ministry. Hope González was hired by Father Dwyer to lead a music program. They purchased musical instruments, and she directed the Hispanic choir of adults and youth. She and her husband, Ramón González, taught the youth to play guitar, piano and percussion and eventually, they played with the choir.

In 1999, The Rev. Irvin “Sherm” Gagnon was installed as the Canon at the Cathedral and the Missioner for Latino/Hispanic Ministries in the Western MA Diocese. He became the pastor for the Hispanic congregation with Father Dwyer’s ongoing support.

Eventually, Hope left her position, and Padre Sherm hired José Passalacqua as the director of music. He directed a choir for adults and youth, and like Hope and Ramón, taught classes in guitar and percussion to youth in the congregation.

A Christian education program for children and youth began. It was known as the Escuela Sabatina, or Saturday School, because it was held on Saturday mornings. A van was purchased that was used to pick up parishioners needing transportation to the 12:15 mass as well as the children in the Sabatina. The first Mission trip to Santo Domingo, which included English and Spanish speakers from the entire diocese, was held. The congregation was off to a very good start!

In 2003, Father Sherm accepted a position in Connecticut, and the Reverend Michael DeVine was called to be the full- time Canon of the Cathedral. With Father Mike’s support and guidance, the Sabatina continued growing as an important ministry that reached out into the community to share the love of Jesus with many children and their families. Father Mike and Xiomara Reyes worked together to coordinate this vital ministry. Father Mike and Xiomara, along with the teachers and the children, started in the Chapel on Saturday mornings where the morning’s Bible teaching was introduced through activities and songs. Then, the children went to their classrooms with their teachers to explore in depth these important lessons. The snacks that were provided were often related to the Biblical theme.

Father Mike regularly held Bible studies and organized spiritual retreats. The Planning Committee, made up of lay people in the congregation, met regularly with Father Mike to plan these special events and special masses throughout the year. The van was kept very busy in these years, providing transportation to the church as well as for excursions with the Sabatina to places like the Magic Wings Conservatory in Deerfield, MA and picnics in Forest Park. Father Mike, Ruben Reyes and Edwin Vélez were van drivers for the Sabatina, and also made the rounds picking up members to go to Bible studies held in the homes of parishioners as well as the Sunday services and other activities.

When Father Mike retired in 2013, the Reverend Tom Callard was called to become the Canon and to pastor the Hispanic congregation. He and his wife, Sagrario, who is from Honduras, and their two younger children arrived from Los Angeles to settle in Springfield. With Father Tom, the Sabbatina continued as well as Bible studies and retreats. When José Passalacqua left his position as music director in 2014, Anibelka Reyes, became the next director and the Hispanic choir continued to thrive.

A new initiative began when a few women decided to form a group for women in the congregation. This group began meeting in each others’ homes for spiritual reflections and prayer time as well as doing community outreach projects like organizing food drives at the holidays, and making gifts to be given to newcomers to the church. This group strengthened us as a community as women invited their friends and relatives to these home meetings.

In 2013, Sara Kalter (Orsino) began offering Beginner English classes for anyone wishing to improve their language skills. This ministry is ongoing and open to all, regardless of church affiliation.

In 2017, Father Tom was called to become the Dean of the Cathedral when Dean James Munroe retired. Around this time, the Reyes family, whose son, José, had been ordained into the Episcopal church and was working at All Saints Church in Worcester, decided to move to be closer to their son and his parish. Due to Anibelka Reyes’ move with her family to Worcester, a new music director was needed. In 2015, Father Tom hired Sergio D’Orsini to become the music director for the Spanish service.

With his additional duties as Dean, several lay persons were hired to assist Father Tom. An Episcopal seminarian student from the Dominican Republic, Joel Martinez, came in 2018 to serve as a Seminarian with the Hispanic congregation while he finished his studies online. Unfortunately, soon after Joel’s arrival, the Pandemic struck and all in -person worship services and activities came to an abrupt halt. Worship services were held at 10:00 in English and at 12:15 in Spanish and were transmitted online. When we finally opened the church again, Joel soon graduated from seminary and was ordained and later installed as our Canon. This ministry was short-lived as St. Paul’s in Holyoke called Father Joel to become their rector in 2022.

In October of 2023, Dean Callard resigned as Dean of the Cathedral to return with Sagrario to California to be near their three children living there. While the Reverend Bernie Poppe was appointed by the Bishop as our Interim Dean, once again the Hispanic congregation needed a new pastor. Father Mike DeVine agreed to return to the Cathedral as pastor to the Hispanic congregation on a part-time basis, while continuing to serve as Interim Rector of St. Peter’s. Father Mike, who is beloved by all in the congregation, has led us through a difficult time of transition. In many ways, we are a stronger community now under his guidance as we await the next priest who will become our pastor.

Historia de la Congregación Latina/Hispana

Nuestra historia se remonta a 1990, cuando el reverendo William Dwyer era rector de la iglesia episcopal de San Pedro en Buckingham Street. Había aprendido español y llegado a conocer y apreciar la cultura latinoamericana cuando era un joven sacerdote en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Durante su estadía en San Pedro, comenzó a tocar puertas y a conocer a aquellos que estaban dispuestos a hablar con él sobre ellos mismos y sus orígenes religiosos. Primero conoció a la señora Yolanda Gautier y su familia; y luego a la familia Reyes cuando vivieron temporalmente con Yolanda. Cuando Xiomara Reyes, su esposo Rubén y sus tres hijos se mudaron a su propio apartamento, el Padre Dwyer continuó sus visitas, celebrando la Sagrada Eucaristía con la familia Reyes, Yolanda, sus hijos y familiares, y también algunos vecinos que las dos mujeres invitaron. Por lo tanto, desde el principio el Padre Dwyer ministró en esta iglesia “casera” compuesta en su mayoría por miembros puertorriqueños y dominicanos. A medida que aumentaba el número, el padre Dwyer comenzó a celebrar una misa semanal en español en la capilla de San Pedro los sábados.

Al final, hubo consenso para que la Congregación Hispana se mudara a su nuevo hogar en la Catedral y el Padre Dwyer continuó su ministerio con la pequeña pero creciente comunidad. Al comienzo, la misa se celebraba en la Capilla de la Reconciliación, una pequeña área en la Catedral cerca de la Sacristía; luego se trasladó a su locación actual.

Hope González fue contratada por el Reverendo Dwyer. En ese momento, se obtuvieron subsidios para financiar el ministerio hispano, incluso la compra de instrumentos y formación y enseñanza del coro hispano. Hope y su esposo, Ramón González, enseñaban a los niños guitarra, piano y percusión.

En 1999, el Reverendo Irvin “Sherm” Gagnon fue nombrado Canónigo de la Catedral y Misionero para los Ministerios Latinos/Hispanos en la Diócesis de Western MA. Se convirtió en pastor de la congregación hispana con el apoyo constante del Padre Dwyer. En 2003, el Padre Sherm aceptó un puesto en Connecticut y el Reverendo Michael DeVine fue llamado a ser canónigo a tiempo completo en la Catedral. Con el apoyo y la guía del Padre Mike, la Escuela Sabatina continuó creciendo como un ministerio importante que se acercó a la comunidad para compartir el amor de Jesús con muchos niños y sus familias. Este grupo comenzó a reunirse en los hogares para reflexiones espirituales y tiempo de oración, además de realizar proyectos de alcance comunitario, como organizar colectas de alimentos durante las Fiestas y hacer obsequios para los recién llegados a la iglesia. Este grupo nos fortaleció como comunidad cuando las mujeres invitaron a sus amigos y familiares a estas reuniones de hogar.

En 2013, Sara Kalter (Orsino) comenzó a ofrecer clases de inglés para principiantes o cualquiera que desee mejorar sus habilidades lingüísticas. Este ministerio es continuo y abierto a todos, independientemente de su afiliación religiosa.

En 2017, el Padre Tom fue llamado a convertirse en el Decano de la Catedral cuando el Decano James Munroe se jubiló. En ese entonces, la familia Reyes, cuyo hijo, José, había sido ordenado en la Iglesia Episcopal, y trabajaba en la Iglesia de Todos los Santos en Worcester, decidió mudarse para estar más cerca de su hijo y su parroquia. Debido a la mudanza de Anibelka Reyes con su familia a Worcester, se necesitaba un nuevo director musical. En 2015, el Decano Tom había contratado a Sergio D’Orsini como músico y, un año después, le ofreció el puesto de director musical del servicio en español.

Además de sus deberes adicionales como Decano, se contrató a varios laicos para ayudar al Decano. Un estudiante seminarista episcopal de República Dominicana, Joel Martínez, llegó en 2018 para servir como seminarista en la congregación hispana mientras terminaba sus estudios online. Desafortunadamente, poco después de la llegada de Joel, se produjo la pandemia del Covid-19 y todos los servicios y actividades de adoración en persona se detuvieron abruptamente. Los servicios de adoración que se llevaban a cabo a las 10:00 en inglés y a las 12:15 en español se transmitieron online. Cuando finalmente abrimos la iglesia nuevamente, Joel pronto se graduó del seminario y fué ordenado, y más tarde nombrado como nuestro canónigo. Este ministerio duró poco ya que la Iglesia de San Pablo de Holyoke llamó al Padre Joel para convertirse en su rector en 2022.

En octubre de 2023, el Decano Tom Callard renunció como Decano de la Catedral para regresar con Sagrario a California y estar cerca de sus tres hijos que viven allí. Mientras que el Obispo nombró al Reverendo Bernie Poppe como nuestro Decano Interino, una vez más la congregación hispana necesitaba un nuevo pastor. Entonces el Padre Mike DeVine acordó regresar a la Catedral como pastor de la congregación hispana a tiempo parcial, mientras continuaba sirviendo como Rector Interino de San Pedro. El Padre Mike, amado por todos en la congregación, nos ha guiado a través de un momento difícil de transición.
